Privacy policy

The short version: I collect as little about you as I can, I only use it for what I say below, and I never sell it. Here's exactly what happens, in plain English.

Who I am

I'm Neil Lovegrove. I run this website (neillovegrove.com) and I'm the "controller" of your personal information — the person responsible for looking after it. If you have any questions about this page or your information, email me atneillovegrovemaker@gmail.com.

What I collect, and why

Only the things below. If a feature isn't listed here, it doesn't collect anything about you.

Free guide and email signups

  • What: your email address — that's all the form asks for. Kit, the email service I use, also records when you signed up and, depending on how I've set it up, whether you open or click my emails.
  • Why: to send you the guide you asked for, and the occasional email about new builds.
  • My legal basis: your consent. You give it when you sign up, and you can take it back at any time with the unsubscribe link in every email.
  • How long: until you unsubscribe or ask me to delete it.
  • Who else handles it: Kit (kit.com), who send the emails for me. Kit is a US company, so your information may be processed outside the UK; Kit's own privacy policy explains the safeguards it uses.

The contact form

  • What: your name, email address and message.
  • Why: so I can read your message and reply.
  • My legal basis: legitimate interests — it would be rude not to reply to someone who wrote to me.
  • How it works: the form sends your message through Web3Forms (web3forms.com), which passes it on to my email inbox (a Gmail account, so Google handles it too).
  • How long: I keep a message only as long as I need to deal with it, and I delete it within a year.

Visitor statistics (Cloudflare Web Analytics)

  • What: counts of visits and page views, with broad details such as which page was viewed, where the visitor came from, their country, and the type of device and browser. Cloudflare says this tool doesn't use cookies or local storage and doesn't track you across other websites. I see totals, not profiles of individual people.
  • Why: to see what's useful so I can make better things.
  • My legal basis: legitimate interests.

Hosting (Cloudflare)

The site is delivered through Cloudflare. Like any web host, it handles technical details of each visit — such as your IP address and browser type — to send you the pages and keep the site safe from attacks. My legal basis is legitimate interests: running and securing the site.

Videos (YouTube)

Each build page shows a thumbnail for its video. That thumbnail comes from YouTube's servers, so YouTube (Google) can see your IP address when the page loads. The video itself only loads when you press play, and I use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode. Once it's playing, YouTube may store cookies or similar on your device and collect information under its own privacy policy.

Fonts

The fonts on this site are hosted on the site itself, so loading them doesn't send anything to Google Fonts or anyone else.

Cookies

This site doesn't set any cookies of its own, doesn't use cookie-based analytics, and doesn't run adverts or tracking pixels. That's why there's no cookie banner — there's nothing to ask you about. Three things could involve cookies, and they're outside my control:

  • Playing a YouTube video. YouTube may set cookies once you press play (see above). Nothing from YouTube's player loads until you do.
  • Links to other sites. I link to YouTube, Patreon, Instagram, TikTok and X, and the Sponsors page has affiliate links. Once you click through, those sites set their own cookies under their own policies. Affiliate links usually set a cookie so the company knows you came from here.
  • Cloudflare security. Cloudflare may set a small cookie to tell real visitors from bots and attacks. It's strictly necessary to keep the site working and safe.

If I ever add something that does use cookies — a different analytics tool, say — I'll ask you first and update this page.

Who I share your information with

I don't sell your information, and I don't use it for advertising. The only people who handle it are the services named above (Kit, Web3Forms, Google, Cloudflare), and only to do the job I've asked them to do — or where the law requires it.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to:

  • be told how your information is used (that's this page);
  • see the information I hold about you;
  • have it corrected, or deleted;
  • restrict or object to how I use it;
  • ask for a copy you can take elsewhere.

Where I'm relying on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time — for emails, use the unsubscribe link in any of them. To use any of these rights, email me and I'll reply within a month.

If you're unhappy with how I've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk, 0303 123 1113). I'd appreciate the chance to put things right first, but you don't have to.

Children

This site isn't aimed at children under 13, and I don't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has signed up, email me and I'll delete it.

Changes to this page

If I change this policy in a way that matters, I'll update the date at the top.
